Greyhound Purebred Dog Breed Information
A member of the AKC Hound group, The Greyhound is one of the fastest breeds of dog in the world and also one of the biggest couch potatoes - they are also one of the fastest land mammals. They are often referred to as "The forty-five mile per hour couch potato."
Considered one of the most ancient of dog breeds, this athletic sight hound was once used by the Egyptians to run down rabbits and gazelles on the open plains of northern Africa.
They are not high-energy dogs, but they are fantastic running machines. They can make a great jogging partner too. Even though they are breed for speed, they are basically a lazy dog breed and enjoys nothing better than lying on the sofa for hours at a time.
Generally even tempered and gentle, these are pack-oriented animals - aggressiveness towards other dogs and people has been nearly eliminated from the breed over time.

The typical racing gait of the breed is a double suspension gallop - all four feet are off the ground at the same time twice during each full stride when this dog reaches this stride.
These dogs are very affectionate, sweet, sensitive dogs that can be aloof with strangers if not socialized properly from an early age and will not overly dote on you. Their gentle nature makes them a very good children's dog.
Without proper attention and exercise, a Greyhound may find other outlets for their energy, which may include chewing. Typical weight: Dogs, 65 to 70 pounds; bitches, 60 to 65 pounds. They are a large, sleek, athletic dog, standing at about 26 inches in height at the shoulder.
It is essential that owners of these dogs provide their dogs with soft places to rest and sleep as they can easily develop pressure sores since they have virtually no body fat. As such, he can tolerate heat well, but are a poor choice for owners living in cold climates.
Due to their lack of an undercoat and lack of body fat they are very susceptible to extreme temperature changes. His coat is a short and requires regular brushing. Best home: indoors with the family.
A few tips: Do not allow them to run unleashed; curb young hounds urge to jump; clear food from counter's and table tops (they do steal unprotected food); provide them with interesting, durable toys and a nice padded bed.
A quiet home is the best environment for a Greyhound. They can adapt to an apartment as long as he is exercised daily. If you're looking for a sweet, quiet and sensitive dog that will love you and yet be content being by himself as well, then a Greyhound could be the right dog for you. One other thing, small animals in the home may be a problem due to his strong prey drive and super fast speed.
