Greyhound Purebred
Dog Breed Information

Greyhound

Description

A member of the Hound group, The Greyhound is one of the fastest

breeds of dog in the world and also one of the biggest couch potatoes - they are also one of the fastest land mammals.

They are often referred to as "The forty-five mile per hour couch potato."

They are not high-energy dogs, even though they are fantastic running machines.

Generally even tempered and gentle, these are pack-oriented animals - aggressiveness towards other dogs and people has been nearly eliminated from the breed over time.

The typical racing gait of the breed is a double suspension gallop. All four feet are off the ground twice during each full stride when this dog reaches this stride.

These dogs are very affectionate, but will not overly dote on you. Their gentle nature makes them a very good of a children's dog.

Without proper attention and exercise, they may find other outlets for their energy, which may include chewing. Typical weight: Dogs, 65 to 70 pounds; bitches, 60 to 65 pounds.

It is essential that owners of these dogs provide their dogs with soft places to rest and sleep as they can easily develop pressure sores.

Due to their lack of an undercoat and lack of body fat they are very susceptible to extreme temperature changes. Best home: indoors with the family.

A few tips: Do not allow them to run unleashed; curb young hounds urge to jump; clear food from counter's and table tops (they do steal unprotected food); provide them with interesting, durable toys.

Country of origin: Egypt
Lifespan: 9-14 years
Colors: Black, blue, gray, brindle, red, white, and any combination of colors or patterns
Known health problems: Not prone to genetic problems
Famous Greys: Santa's Little Helper from, The Simpsons cartoon series
