their family and children but are not aggressive unless they, or someone they love, is being threatened. The Gordon is alert, interested, aggressive, fearless, willing, intelligent, and capable. They are also loyal and affectionate, and strong-minded enough to stand up to the rigors of training. They are the largest, heaviest and the slowest working of all the Setter breeds and also make great family companions. This dog should be introduced to all types of situations early on as a young pup to produce the best, well-balanced dog. Weekly brushing and combing is a must. Historically speaking, the Duke of Gordon is credited with establishing the Gordon Setter with its present characteristics back in the 1820’s. Later, George Blunt and Daniel Webster were credited with founding this breed in the USA. The AKC officially recognized the Gordon in 1892.

It is the only black & tan setter breed known today. According to the breed standard, its color should always be black with clearly differentiated tan markings. A Gordon's coat can be straight or slightly wavy (but not curly). It is also long and silky in texture, and has chest, stomach, ear, leg, and tail feathering. He suggests strength and stamina rather than extreme speed. They are also one of the slowest maturing dog breeds. They continue to act like a puppy well into their older years. This breed needs lots of exercise so keep that in mind if you are considering adding a Gordon Setter to your family. It is also a good idea to have a fenced-in yard if you consider owning one of these dogs, since they like to wander. The Gordon is a good-sized, sturdily built, black and tan dog, well muscled, with plenty of bone and substance, but active, upstanding and stylish, appearing capable of doing a full day's work in the field.
