Giant Schnauzer Purebred
Dog Breed Information

Giant Schnauzer

Description

The Giant Schnauzer, a member of the AKC Working group,

should resemble, as nearly as possible, a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer in general appearance.

They were first used in Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries as a cattle and sheep drover.

They have also been used as a guard dog and have also worked with both the military and the police.

Their coat color typically is either black or salt and pepper.

Their all weather coat was developed to help protect him in the cold, wet dreary European weather.

The sound, reliable temperament, rugged build, and dense weather-resistant wiry coat make for one of the most useful, powerful, and enduring working breeds known today.

It also has bushy eyebrows, whiskers and a beard. The harsh double wire coat requires skilled professional grooming at least twice a year and weekly grooming in between.

This breed is known for loyalty to their owners and are eager to defend their family and property. They are truly a "Velcro" dog. It longs to be with its owner at all times.

The Giant Schnauzer can be very protective, making him an excellent watchdog. They also can be very dog-aggressive with a high prey drive toward smaller animals.

The Giant should closely resemble the Standard and Miniature Schnauzers, but it is important to understand the Giant, Standard, and Miniature Schnauzer are three separate and distinct breeds.

This breed is not a giant dog, but he is the largest of the Schnauzers standing 23 to 27 inches at the withers.

They are a reliable breed and are good with children and other pets if socialized with them early on. Remember, socialize, socialize, socialize.

Country of origin: Germany
Lifespan: 10-12 years
Colors: Solid black, salt and pepper
Known health problems: Generally a healthy breed
