English Toy Spaniel -
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

A member of the Toy group, The English Toy Spaniel is a bright little dog who is affectionate and very willing to please his owner.

The ET was originally thought of as a British breed but is really an ancient breed that can be traced back to Japan around 2000BC. He was introduced into Spain and later England by traders at the time in the 16th and 17th centuries.

This little dog breed has been associated with many royalties. In 1903, the United Kingdom tried to change this dog breed's name to Toy Spaniel however, King Edward VII, a champion of the breed, opposed the change and the breed name remained as King Charles Spaniel.

These are a loyal breed and likes nothing better than to sit in his owner's lap. It's gentle and loving temperament make him an ideal dog for the elderly.

This breeds coat is not known for excessive shedding, but it should be brushed several times a week to maintain a healthy coat.

The coat can be straight or wavy and also thick. It does have heavy feathering on the ears, chest, legs and body and stands about 9-10 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 8 to 12 pounds.

This breed is also sometimes affectionately referred to as E.T.s' or Charlies'. Best advice, Charlies should be kept on-lead or in a fenced-in yard as they do not typically need a lot of exercise but may wander off if given the opportunity.

His compact, sturdy body and charming temperament, together with his rounded head, lustrous dark eyes, and well cushioned face, proclaim him a dog of distinction and character.

They are not generally known for excessive barking. Because of his spaniel instincts, this dog really enjoys a game of retrieving such as a toy or a ball.

The ET is a compact, cobby, and essentially square toy dog possessed of a short-nosed, domed head, a merry and affectionate demeanor, and a silky, flowing coat.

An apartment is fine for the English Toy Spaniel as long as he gets 1 or 2 walks a day. Did you know that it is more closely related to the pug than to cocker spaniels?

This breed is also susceptible to ear infections. In addition, be very careful of his protruding eyes because they can easily be damaged by rubbing against a wall or with a leash.
