Dogue de Bordeaux Purebred Dog Breed Information
The Dogue de Bordeaux is the newest member of the AKC Working Dog Group but has been known in France as early as the fourteenth century. The history of the Bordeaux dog includes fighting all kinds of animals; bears, wolves, tigers and lions.
This breed has also been used for guarding of his family, house and property, hunting, and in the ring, fighting against various other types of animals.
Also called the French Mastiff, Bordeaux dog, Bulldogue Francais, or, most commonly among fanciers, as the DDB, this is a large, heavy boned breed of dog weighing in at 120-145 pounds.
This breed is a first class watch dog or guard dog and can be very aggressive with other dogs. They are a fearless and powerful dog. Socialization is very important - especially with other kinds of animals from a very early age.
In spite of his fearsome and terrible appearance, the Dogue de Bordeaux is very gentle with children and members of their own family, however, this breed is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced dog owner.

Be forewarned, these dogs do snore and they do drool. Grooming of a DDB is very minimal thanks to their short coat. When bathing, don't forget to clean the wrinkles as well.
Basic Obedience training is a MUST as is early socialization in young Dogue de Bordeaux. These dogs are highly intelligent and once they learn something, they will not easily forget it.
Dr. Carl Semenic said in the book, Fighting Dogs of the World, "Raise them to be gentle and they will be gentle. Raise them to be vicious, and they will be vicious......Problems lie not in the breed, but in the people." Couldn't have been said any better.
