Dachshund - Purebred Dogs and Puppies
Long coated
Smooth coated
Wire coated
The Dachshund, a member of the AKC Hound Group, was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers. This dog breed was once larger than it is today. Their size was eventually bred down to be smaller because it was purposefully bred down in size to hunt foxes and rabbits.
The breed's name is German and quite literally translates into “badger dog” - although these dogs are hounds, they do have feisty terrier personalities.
Don't let it's short stature fool you. This dog breed has an excellent sense of smell as well as a bold and fierce temperament that allows it to tangle with even the most difficult prey.
In the United States they are often affectionately referred to as wiener dog, Doxie, weinnie dog, hot dog, or sausage dog.

Low to ground, long in overall body length, short of leg having robust muscular development, their skin is elastic and pliable without excessive wrinkling.
Appearing neither crippled, awkward, nor cramped in his capacity for movement, they are a loyal dog breed with well-balanced bold and confident head carriage and intelligent, alert facial expression. Many wieners can be stubborn which in turn makes them a challenge to train.
They come in two sizes: standard and miniature. The standard is approximately 9 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 12 to 24 pounds while the miniature doxie typically stands about 5 to 6 inches at the shoulder and weighs under 12 pounds.
His hunting spirit, good nose, loud voice and distinctive build make him well-suited for below-ground work, hunting any kinds of hole-dwelling animals and for beating the bush - many wieners have no bite inhibition as well.
His keen nose also gives him an advantage over most other breeds for trailing. They are naturally free from a "doggy" odor. Also known as the "weinnie dog", they make a good companion whether you live in a small city apartment or the country.
The Dachshund requires consistent obedience training and early socialization. His great sense of smell will often lead it astray. Nevertheless, the Dachshund is very personable and can make a great companion dog.
There are three accepted types of coats with this dog breed; long, short and wired. The smooth coat doxie is usually alert, bold, and friendly. The long haired doxies coat is usually more timid and reserved with strangers and requires a more patient training technique. The wire haired Dachshund tends to be the most active of the three and, though friendly, is also the most stubborn.
They require minimal routine brushing to keep their coats healthy and in good condition. The longhaired and wirehaired versions may require extra grooming or help from a professional. There are 2 sizes - standard (16-32 pounds) and miniature (11 pounds and under).
