Collies - Purebred Information on Rough and Smooth
Smooth Collie (Short coat)
Rough Collie (Long coat)
Collies are a member of the AKC Herding group. They are lithe, strong, responsive and active dog who gets along great with other pets if properly socialized. Thanks to Lassie, this is one of the most popular dog breeds - she even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Many even refer to the Collie as the "boyscout or girlscout" of the dog world because of their able to think independently, their loyalty and work ethic.
The deep, moderately wide chest shows strength, the sloping shoulders and well-bent hocks indicate speed and grace, and the face shows high intelligence. The ears should always be folded at the top.
They are an alert watchdog, quick to sound alarm and very protective of his family, although he is not an aggressive dog.
Bred to work with people, these dogs are exceptionally easy to train. They are good in both hot and cold environments but need loads of daily exercise. They are the ultimate helper, herder, guard and devoted companion.
Well renowned for his loyalty, intelligence and his reliability, they make a great companion and friend and is best suited to living indoors with their "human flock".
Note: The smooth and rough collie are defined by the same breed standard and they only differ in coat quantity and distribution.
Roughs have a double coat with a harder, longer weather-resistant outer coat and a softer, fluffy undercoat. Rough coated Collies were traditionally used more in herding activities.
Smooths have the same double coat, however the outer coat is much shorter and denser than the roughs. Smooth coated Collies were generally used more in driving the herd to market.
Both rough and smooth coats require thorough weekly brushings to keep the coat clean and free of mats. Dogs are: 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder, weigh from 60 to 75 pounds. Bitches are: 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder, weighing from 50 to 65 pounds.
