Chihuahua - Purebred
Dogs and Puppies

A member of the AKC Toy group, The Chihuahua's small size makes it a wonderful dog for people who live in small city apartments. Usually they are 6 pounds or less and 6 to 9 inches in height.

These dogs are very protective of their owners and the rest of their family. Preferring his own kind, as a rule, he does not like dogs of other breeds and does not always get along with children.

They are commonly referred to as a "Chi". They do not tolerate cold climates and must be protected when taken outside from extreme temperatures.

All are considered toy dogs but they seem to have no concept of their own size, and often fearlessly confront larger animals, which can result in injury to them.

A graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact, and with terrier-like qualities of temperament, the breed is very hardy and adaptable, but it must live inside a home or an apartment. They should not live outside.

An ancient breed, these dogs are good travelers and can easily go anywhere with their owners. They are the smallest breed of dog in the world and is named for the Chihuahua State in Mexico.

They are best known for their small size and large erect ears and come in two varieties: long and smooth coat. Short-haired Chi's need very little brushing, perhaps once every week or so. Long-haired Chi's will need a brushing more often - maybe twice weekly.

Overall, the Chi does require veterinary attention especially in areas such as birthing and dental care. Dental hygiene is an absolute must to prevent tooth loss in this breed. They are also prone to ear infections male Chi's especially have a genetic predisposition to developing cystine bladder stones.

Contrary to what many people may believe, the Chihuahua is ready for exercise though he will not object to an occasional ride in a shopping cart or car. He gets most of his exercise from running around inside the house, playing.

This breed requires only minimal grooming. The Chihuahua should be groomed using a soft brush. A rub down with a glove or wet towel will make his coat glisten. His nails need to be trimmed regularly and it is important that the ears need to be kept clean.

They have a wide range of coat colors and come in two different coat types: short or long. The smooth coated variety requires only occasional brushing while the long coated variety should be brushed several times a week. Both varieties only need bathing once a month or so using a very mild shampoo.

Health issues that most often affect this breed include open font or soft spot, also called a molera - a small opening on top of the skull, slipped stifles, eye problems, and heart disease. It is very important to keep your Chihuahua at a healthy weight too.
