Cesky Terrier Dog Breed Information

The Cesky Terrier is a new member of the AKC Miscellaneous Group. They are known by several names such as the Bohemian Terrier,Czesky Terrier, Ceský Teriér and Chesky Terrier. The Cesky's original purpose was to hunt for vermin in their dens, especially rats and foxes.

A Czechoslovakian breeder named Frantisek Horak had a large part in The Cesky Terrier origins and it can be said that this dog breed exists due primarily to his efforts.

Due to Horak's influence on this breed the Cesky has a narrower head and chest, a softer coat than many other terriers, and an easy-going temperament compared to many other terriers.

Cesky Terrier

The Cesky Terrier is a great companion dog, a good hunter, a good tracker, as well as a great watch and guard dog. Overall they are good with children and tend to be less dog-aggressive than many other terrier dog breeds. Generally speaking they are considered a sweet little dog breed and love people, especially children.

These dogs look very similar to the Sealyham Terrier overall. The Cesky Terrier has a long head, bushy beard, mustache and heavy, bushy eyebrows. Their wavy, silky coat color comes in various shades of gray, white, gray-blue with tan or light coffee. It is interesting to note that puppies are born black in color and their coat lightens between as they mature up to two years of age.

The Cesky is a very new breed compared to most other dog breeds, being first recognized by the FCI in 1963. These dogs are very loyal to their owners, obedient, and courageous dogs. All in all, they are intelligent and much more trainable than many other terriers.

Their longer hair needs to be brushed a few times a week to prevent tangles. Additionally, they should be trimmed regularly, leaving the hair long on their legs, stomach, moustache, beard, and eyebrows. If you have a pet Cesky it will probably need to be trimmed about four or so times during the year.

This sociable little dog breed gets along well with most other dogs and household animals if socialized with them from an early age. These are good little dogs to travel with. In addition they are an excellent companion dog that can play with children one moment, but still be an attentive and threatening house guard the next.

Country of origin: Czechoslovakia
Lifespan: 12 to 15 years or so
Colors: gray-blue, gray, white, light coffee
Known health problems: Scottie Cramp
