The Cane Corso - Corso

The Cane Corso is a new member of the AKC Working Dog Group. This dog breed originated in Italy. This dog breed is known by many different names such as: Italian Mastiff, Italian Corso Dog, Cane da Macellaio and Italian Molosso.

These dogs were often employed as property, hunting, cattle and personal guard dogs. They have been bred as working dogs for hundreds of years all over Italy.

It is highly recommended that these dogs be thoroughly socialized beginning in puppyhood. Obedience training is also very important.

Compared to many dog breeds, the Cane Corso is normally a very quiet dog, barking only when alerted to something out of the ordinary. Despite their overall build and somewhat scary look (to those unfamiliar with this dog breed) they do make excellent house dogs.

Cane Corso

The Corso is a highly intelligent and very trainable dog breed. They are an wonderful watch and/or protection dog. It makes an excellent guard dog and watchdog and they are not known to wander away from their home territory.

They normally stay very close to their masters, house and property. Contrary to popular belief, the Corso is not a fighting dog. They are not known go out "looking" for a fight, however they will not back down from a fight if pushed.

These dogs have been bred as working dogs for hundreds of years. Keep in mind that the Corso is not recommended for first time dog owners - they do require an experienced dog owner. Be forewarned, they can be aggressive with strangers or other dogs.

The Corso can be great with children in the family. Overall, they are protective dogs but can be very gentle. This athletic dog breed does need a lot of regular exercise and they can make excellent jogging companions. They do not require a lot of grooming and overall are considered a light shedder.

Country of origin: Italy
Lifespan: 10-11 years
Colors: Light to dark fawn, tubby, Black, plumb-gray, slate, light gray, blue/gray
Known health problems: Hip Dysplasia, Bloat, Demodex Mange, Eyelid Abnormalities
