herding and flock guardian dog breed native to the Middle East. It is also known as Kelev K'naani. It's origins are of Pariah Dog stock and was originally developed from re-domesticated Pariah Dog stock captured in Palestine. He is aloof with strangers, inquisitive, loyal, loving with his family and highly territorial. The Canaan is also very naturally clean and is easily housebroken as well. The intelligent Canaan tends to be a one person dog or a one family dog. This is also a very responsive companion dog breed and they are great natural guardians. They are very vocal, persistent and can be trained quite easily. They are also a natural guard dog and an excellent watchdog. This breed also requires extensive socialization and training for a longer period of time than most breeds today.

He has a medium-sized, square body that is without extreme angles. Height at the withers is 20 - 24 inches for dogs and 19 - 23 inches for bitches. The ideal Canaan lies in the middle of these stated ranges. Dogs generally weigh 45 - 55 pounds and bitches approximately 35 - 45 pounds. This breed is fairly easy to groom however they are a seasonal heavy shedder. This is a working dog that will not be happy just sitting around by no means. These intelligent dogs need lots of exercise and mental and physical challenges so keep that in mind if you are thinking about adding one of these dogs to your family. The Canaan Dog would make an excellent jogging companion and they excel in dog sports such as agility, herding trials and obedience training as well. They may wander and should be kept in a fenced-in yard since they may be aggressive with dogs of the same sex especially. Country of origin: Israel
