The Bullmastiff, a member of the AKC Working group, is a very
large, levelheaded and steady dog.
He was originally developed to be courageous, quick and strong for use as a guard dog against poachers without actually harming them.
They have a powerful and well muscled body with a short, low-maintenance fawn, reddish brown, or brindle coat with cropped or uncropped ears.
He gets along very well with other family pets and loves children in their own family but is very suspicious of strangers and other dogs and are considered to be one of the most territorial of all dog breeds.
Despite their large size, these dogs are relatively agile animals with great strength and endurance.
This breed was created by crossing Mastiffs with Bulldogs in England in the early 1920's - 60% Mastiff, 40% Bulldog.

Typically, dogs are around 25 and 27 in. tall at the withers and between 110 and 130 lbs. while bitches are usually between 24 and 26 in. tall and 100 to 130 lbs. in weight when completely mature. He is both brave and protective of his family.
Bred to sneak up on poachers, the Bullmastiff often barks much less than other breeds - he saves his large, deep bark for really important matters.
Bred to be guardians and protectors these dogs are fairly quiet.
They are bred to approach any intruder and knock them over with its massive size.
Next, they pin them to the ground, or, will simply stand in front of the stranger/intruder and refuse to let them pass until help comes.
Remember that this dog breed was specifically designed to challenge human beings and will do so without hesitation if a threat is perceived by them. If a Bullmastiff does become aggressive, it can be explosive and even possibly unstoppable.
This dog breed could easily kill another dog in seconds, so please socialize and train this dog from day one. He is very large and strong, so early obedience training for puppies is a must. Early socialization is a must as well for a dog this big and powerful once it becomes an adult. As a puppy, his chewing needs are big too.
More aggressive than the mastiff, these dogs need a confident leader and handler who can assert his dominance with ease. Remember too that this dog breed matures very slowly and needs regular exercise.
As a general rule, tone of voice needed to work with these dogs generally never needs to be loud or harsh as they are quite sensitive.
Be forewarned, this breed does drool, snore, slobber and is often flatulent.
