Boykin Spaniel - Purebred
Dog Breed Information

The Boykin Spaniel is a member of the AKC Sporting Dog Breed Group. These dogs are fantastic swimmers. Size-wise, The Boykin is larger in size than the better known Cocker Spaniel.

They are reported to have a very fine nose and are reported as being a very versatile hunter, especially for upland birds and water fowl. They really enjoy the water and swimming.

Keep in mind that they are highly prone to ear infections because of their long pendulous ears. They should be dried thoroughly each and every time after they get wet.

Boykin Spaniel

Originally, they were developed in South Carolina in the US, just after the turn of the 20th century, to be the ideal dog to hunt ducks and wild turkeys in the swampy areas of the state. These dogs are now the state dog of South Carolina, USA.

The Boykin Spaniel dog breed was developed almost entirely from a stray named "Dumpy" who had a wonderful bird sense by a gentleman named L. Whitaker Boykin, with various crosses to other Springer Spaniels, American Water Spaniels, Pointers and Retrievers.

Keep in mind that the Boykin is a working dog and they need a lot of daily exercise. They need adequate exercise and a “job” to do daily to burn off energy and exercise their very active mind.

Be forewarned, these dogs are definitely an energetic breed, designed to be able to work all day in the field. So if you want a couch potato to watch TV with you, then choose another breed.

Country of origin: United States
Lifespan: 14-16 years
Colors: Liver or Brown
Known health problems: Hip Dysplasia, eye problems, sometimes heart or skin problems
