The Boerboel is one of the newest members of the AKC Miscellaneous Dog Group. These mastiff type dogs as a breed come from South Africa where they were bred for the specific purpose of guarding their owners homes.
These dogs are also known by the names: South African Boerboel or South African Mastiff. The name of this dog breed can also be interpreted as either "farmer's dog" or "Boer's dog".
These large, active and strong dogs are probably descended from many of the indigenous dog breeds already in South Africa plus many different dog breeds brought in with many of the French, Dutch or British settlers that came to South Africa years ago.
These large dogs are heavy too and look a lot like a mastiff. That being said, they range from around 23 to 27 in height. Plus, when fully grown, they can easily weigh between 110 to 175 lbs.

Much like other Mastiffs, they also have a short, easy to maintain coat. They can be black, red, brown, or fawn in color with a black mask surrounding their mouth area. They can have patterns on their coat as well such as piebald or brindle.
As a natural guarding type dog breed, these dogs need lots of socialization and exercise as well. Otherwise you may have a lot of issues with dogs destroying your items just out of boredom for one thing, and problems having visitors come to your home.
These dogs are certainly an unsuitable choice of dog breed for new or first time dog owners. Why? Because of their inherent protective instincts, intelligence, physical strength, large size and potential stubbornness for one thing.
