Bluetick Coonhound
Purebred Dog Breed Information

The Bluetick Coonhound is a new member of the AKC Hound Breed Group. These dogs have a short, dense coat that is slightly coarse to the touch and covered in mottled blue speckles all over.

Most often, the Bluetick's coat is tricolor with a uniquely speckled-blue pattern on it as well, called "ticking".

The Bluetick also has extremely good eyesight, which allows them to work well at night, especially when hunting.

They are a very intelligent dog breed and can be a good family dog but should not be trusted with non-canine pets.

Remember, these are a hunting dog breed. They do need a good bit of exercise too so please keep that in mind if you're thinking about getting one of these dogs for yourself.

These dogs have a strong instinct to tree animals like Raccoons and other game. Each dog has a unique "voice" which it's owners usually can recognize and these dogs can be quite vocal, so if you don't like a talkative dog breed, then this may not be the dog for you.

The Bluetick Coonhound excels in hunting trials and can also be used to track fox or even cougar in addition to raccoons. These dogs originated in the state of Tennessee, USA and are also the state dog there.

Watch a Bluetick in action

It's highly suggested to socialize this dog breed well, especially while it's still young. Additionally, don't let this dog breed off the leash in an unsafe or unsecured area because they may take off after an interesting scent and be gone before you know it.

This breed may drool or slobber, so be forewarned. Also, their noses will get them into lots of trouble - especially when food or garbage or other smelly things are around, so food and garbage should definitely not be left out unattended with these dogs.

Bluetick Coonhounds should be around 22 to 27 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh around 55 to 80 pounds - females are around 21 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 45 to 65 pounds.

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren't certain we knew better." - George Bird Evans, "Troubles with Bird Dogs"
