Black and Tan Coonhound -
Purebred Dogs and Puppies

Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound, a member of the AKC Hound group, is used principally for trailing and treeing raccoons, and runs his game entirely by scent. These dogs were perfected in the southern United States and is one of six different types of Coonhound used as a tracker of opossum, raccoon and even bear.

Their instinct to track is often stronger than the owner's ability to control. It almost seems as if the dog goes into some sort of trance-like state that is very hard to break through.

A terrific athlete, the Black and Tan is well known for howling after treeing his quarry. He is very vocal, making him best suited to living on a farm or out in the country.

The characteristics and courage of the Coonhound also make him proficient on the hunt for deer, bear, mountain lion, and other big game.

The general impression of this hound is that of power, agility, and alertness. He immediately impresses one with his ability to cover the ground with powerful rhythmic strides.

Warning: this dog breed can be provoked to aggression if required to obey when he does not want to or if he does not understand what he is expected to do. It may react in an explosive, non-thinking type of aggression that happens with very little warning.

The breed standard for Black and Tan Coonhounds, as far as appearance goes, includes the following (and more):

• Eyes are hazel to brown
• Ears extend past the tip of the nose

Due to the their hunting instincts, they should never be turned loose or exercised unless within the confines of a securely fenced yard - and they are not recommended for apartment life.

Be forewarned, this breed drools and slobbers - a lot. Also, vigorous daily exercise is needed to keep this dog healthy and happy.

Coonhounds are medium-large dogs (65-100 pounds), and can adapt to living either outside or indoors. Standing 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder weighing between 70 and 90 pounds, this is a big, strong, agile scent hound.

Their coat is short, dense and requires regular brushing. Regular ear checks are also very important with this breed.

A house with a fenced yard or a kennel is absolutely essential if you want to own one of these dogs. The Black and Tan Coonhound does much better when owned and used by a hunter on a regular basis.

He is a working hound breed that needs regular exercise as plenty of supervision with firm, no-nonsense leadership. Obedience training and socialization from day one are recommended.

Country of origin: United States
Lifespan: 10-12 years
