Beauceron Purebred
Dog Breed Information

Beauceron

Description

The Beauceron, a strictly French breed, is strong, intelligent,

quick to learn, versatile, and very faithful.

To me, they resemble a cross between the Doberman Pinscher and the German Shepherd.

Be forewarned, they are territorial and early socialization is a definite must.

They are an old herding breed eventhough they are almost unknown outside of their native France.

Short-coated, they come in 2 color patterns: the common black and tan and the rare harlequin, a pattern similar to dapple in Dachshunds or merle in Great Danes.

They are considered average shedders and grooming is fairly easy to maintain on a weekly basis.

They average 27.5 inches tall and can weigh more than 100 pounds. They have a distinctive double dewclaw on their hind legs, giving them six toes per rear foot.

Most often the ears are generally cropped making them stand erect. Sometimes ears are kept natural and should be half-pricked with at least one-third of the ear remaining erect.

They can be good with children and other animals if socialized at an early age and require minimal grooming but daily exercise.

Also, they are instinctive herders and will herd just about everything in sight unless trained to do otherwise.

They need lots of attention and exercise to be happy. It also needs a specific job to do and lots of space to use up his energy.

Agility is a great sporting outlet to participate in with this vigorous dog breed. Best home: indoors with a large fenced outdoor area to play in.

Country of origin: France
Lifespan: 11-13 years
Colors: Black and rust, harlequin
Known health problems: Hip & elbow dysplasia, bloat
