Beagle - Purebred Dogs and Puppies
The Beagle comes in two sizes, 13 inch and 15 inch. A miniature Foxhound, their coat is short and requires minimal grooming. He is a member of the AKC hound group.
He weighs between 18 to 30 pounds and has hunted many different quarries in different climates including fox, jackal, wild pig, and deer.
These dogs are an ideal companion for children. Especially those kids that like to play about outside on adventures accompanied by a very sweet little dog.
He is a "wash and wear" kind of dog. Clean the outside of their ears daily if they happen to get in their food dish while eating. It is also a good idea to check the inside of their ears every week.
They should never be allowed to roam free, as its nose will surely get it into real trouble. It is very true that their nose often overrules their brain. They have been used in alone or in packs, for hunting various prey such as rabbit/hare, pheasant and quail.

They are prone to several conditions that will cause poor skin and coat problems, such as hypothyroid disease and zinc-responsive dermatosis.
These dogs are extremely scent-oriented and food obsessed. Obesity is a fairly common health problem. Help prevent it by encouraging your dog to exercise regularly.
The breed standard describes this dog as "A merry hound whose essential function is to hunt, primarily hare, by following a scent - bold with great activity, stamina, and determination - alert, intelligent, and of even temperament - a sturdy and compactly-built hound, conveying the impression of quality without coarseness."
They're basically a big nose and stomach on four legs. These are scent hounds and are used primarily for hunting rabbits and hares in the field.
They will do just fine inside an apartment or house if they get plenty of chances to be outdoors and get enough exercise. Daily exercise is required for this dog breed. Future owners should also be aware that these dogs are known to bark, bay and dig as part of their hunting heritage.
Typically these little dogs have a white-tipped tail (sometimes called a "flag") which is very important in locating them in the field due to their short height. It would not be very hard to find them however even if you couldn't see the raised tail due to their very characteristic howling or baying which is also called "tonguing".
Just so you'll know, their loud baying barking yelp is quite a delight to hunters or horsemen, but it can be very disturbing to family and neighbors not accustomed to their call.
If your little sniffer becomes irritable or snappy quite suddenly, please get an immediate veterinary consult to investigate the possibility of back or neck pain because these dogs are seldom surly in disposition.
Always use a leash when walking this dog breed since they do tend to follow their noses and may leave you in search of quarry if given the chance. They are prone to wandering as well - especially un-neutered males.
This breed of dog is often used as sniffer dogs for drug detection. They are also used to detect contraband food items in luggage being transported into the U.S. from other countries for the United States Department of Agriculture.
