Azawakh - Azawakh Hound

The Azawakh dog is an ancient sighthound dog breed originally from Africa. Originally bred by various nomadic tribes of the Sahara, these dogs were used for many different purposes such as a companion, a hunting dog and also as a guard dog.

These dogs have that very typical sighthound look in that they are very lean, and give off the impression of it being a "running machine". It is thin, leggy, tall, lean, muscular and has a short coat in various shades and patterns and reminds me a lot of the Greyhound, Saluki and even the Whippet.

These dogs are very elegant and even aristocratic looking I think. And to see them run, I can't even imagine the joy that that would be to see a pack of Azawakh chasing off a predator.

This hound dog usually has some sort of white markings such as a white bib, white brush at the tail tip and white stockings or socks on their legs. As I said previously, they can come dressed in many colors such as chocolate, white, black, gray, blue, brindles, grizzle, parti-colored and many shades of brown and fawn colors.

If you are an athlete yourself, especially a jogger or a runner, then you couldn't get a better companion to join you as you exercised. They are very active dogs overall, however they are just as happy to sleep on the couch when given the chance.

Azawakh

The best home for a dog breed such as the Azawakh would be one that had a enclosed fenced area for them to exercise in. You do not want to just let these dogs run loose just anywhere otherwise you may never get them back. Plus, they do best in a home where they either have another dog or a human to exercise with otherwise they'll probably get bored which could lead to many different kinds of problems.

Keep in mind where these dogs originally came from - they are desert dogs through and through, so if you live in a desert area then that would be perfect the perfect home. And if you live in an area that is often cold or wet, then this is definitely not the best choice of dog breed for you since they hate this kind of climate.

These dogs are natural born protectors. They are also said to be very loyal to their owners once they have bonded with them. However, extensive socialization and training are required and an owner must have a firm hand to keep these dogs happy and in control.

Country of origin: Africa - Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso
Lifespan: Around 12 years
Colors: Red, blue fawn, grizzle, blue, dark fawn, black
Known health problems: Epilepsy, Wobbler disease
