Australian Cattle Dog
Purebred Dog Information

Australian Cattle Dog

Description

The Australian Cattle Dog, a member of the Herding group,

was originally bred to work cattle in the rough inland terrain of Australia.

They are a "wash and wear" dog overall - the only grooming required is a bath and a good brushing to keep the coat clean and healthy.

Their grooming needs are low while their exercise needs are high. These dogs are not a good dog choice for an apartment dweller or the couch potato.

Bred to herd all day, Australian Cattle Dogs have a lot of energy. Female ACD's tend to be more obsessive about rules than their male counterparts.

These dogs need a job and if you don't provide them with one, it may choose to find one on it's own - so be forewarned, and plan accordingly. ACD's do have very high energy levels and extremely active minds. Because of this they do need plenty of exercise and a job to do.

The ACD is sometimes called the Red Heeler, Blue Heeler, Queensland Heeler, Queensland Blue Heeler, and was originally known as the Australian Heeler.

ACD's love their owners and especially love to play with children. They thrive on change and new experiences and become easily frustrated at repetition and routine.

ACD's are naturally suspicious of strangers, sturdy, alert, watchful, extremely intelligent, courageous, and trustworthy, with an implicit devotion to duty making it an ideal dog.

Country of origin: Australia
Lifespan: 10-13 years
Colors: Red or blue speckled
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, inherited blindness and deafness
Famous ACD's: Dog in Mad Max 2; Mean dog in "Babe"
