American Staffordshire Terrier

Description

A member of the Terrier group, The American Staffordshire

Terriers are intelligent and excellent guardians and should give the impression of great strength for his size.

Their ears are usually cropped though this is optional.

They are generally larger in bone structure, head size and overall weight than their cousins the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Staffordshire Terriers are a well put-together dog. They are muscular, but agile and graceful, and keenly aware of their surroundings.

He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline. His courage is proverbial. Over the past 50 years, careful breeding has produced today's AmStaff who is trustworthy, affectionate, reliable, and an especially good dog choice for people with children.

The AmStaff is a happy, outgoing, stable, and confident dog who makes a wonderful family pet that does need plenty of regular exercise. They can make great pets with the right kind of owner.

Socialize these dogs thoroughly when young to curb any dog aggressive tendencies before they crop up. Left un-socialized, many Staffs may be dog aggressive.

The Staffie is adaptable to country or city living, the only thing that will break his spirit and his heart is lack of his owner's fond attention. The Staffie was originally bred in England and Ireland.

Country of origin: England
Lifespan: 10-16 years
Colors: Black, blue, fawn, brindle (often with white markings)
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, cataracts. HC & PHPV (eye diseases)
Famous Staffies: Pete the Pup in many "Our Gang" films
