This Water Spaniel is a also known as a great retriever and can handle any type of game. An American breed, this little flushing spaniel is also a very competent retriever, though not entirely well known in the states. They can hunt both feathered and furred game. After water retrieving bathing is suggested, at least monthly, in order to control "wet-dog" odor. Grooming of the curly or uniformly wavy coat is needed every few days to prevent tangles and to keep the coat in decent shape. The average AWS This little brown dog possesses many of the common spaniel characteristics however they are slower to mature overall than many of their spaniel cousins. Besides being an excellent swimmer, the AWS is also an efficient watch dog. This breed does need frequent exercise and training to mature into that loving friend and companion that people look for in a dog. Small in stature, compared to many of the other sporting dog breeds, the AWS is a bundle of energy with the physical ability, mental alertness and intelligence to complete hunting activities with its owner - especially in restricted hunting areas or in smaller urban quarters.

The American Water Spaniel, originating around the mid-1800s, was the first breed developed in the United States as an all-around hunter that could retrieve from boats. The AWS origins are not entirely known, however, it was likely developed in valley areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Its popularity peak time was probably around the 1920s and 1930s. They are good with children and other pets with an established pack order - un-neutered males may challenge each other. Many AWS' may "yodel" - when excited this breed does have a tendency to bark so be forewarned. Typically males are 15-18 inches tall and 30-45 pounds, females are slightly smaller in size.
