Akita Dog - Purebred Dogs and Puppies

Akita

A member of the AKC Working group, The Akita Dog, originally from Japan, is there described as "tender in heart and strong in strength."

This dog breed, initially developed as a versatile hunting dog with size, power and a good sense of smell, was named after the Akita province in Japan on the island of Honshu.

In ancient Japan they were so highly regarded that only the ruling class were allowed to own these dogs. They were bred to be able to deal with bears, deer and wild boars as well.

Did you know that Helen Keller is credited as being the first person to bring an Akita to the United States of America? It's true.

The Akita Dog is extremely loyal to family and friends and are unusually tolerant and patient with children, but are reserved and aloof with strangers. They thrive on companionship.

A fenced yard is a must for these dogs. Alert and responsive, dignified and courageous, they ARE aggressive toward other dogs and should never be allowed to run off its lead around other animals. In fact, Akitas are considered a high risk dog breed by the insurance agency because of biting and their aggressive nature.

Additionally, it should be noted that they vocalize with many different and interesting sounds, but are not considered an excessive barker.

This dog breed absolutely loves cold weather and likes to play in the snow. They are also very intelligent, strong and athletic as well as extremely faithful and affectionate to his owners.

In Japan, small statues of the Akita are often sent to people who are sick to express a wish for a speedy recovery. They are also given to parents of newborn children to symbolize good health.

Be forewarned, they can also be difficult to housebreak. Additionally, obedience training, socialization and handling must start early on with this dog breed and the owner must be firm, precise and patient because there can be aggression and dominance problems otherwise.

Believe it or not, but these are one of the most primitive dogs on the planet - still very closely linked to the wolf. As a matter of fact, these dogs originated in Japan centuries ago in the harsh snow country of the Akita prefecture.

Even so, this breed faced extinction in World War I when they were killed for their pelts which were then used to line the coats of Japanese soldiers, to keep them war during battle.

This is a dog breed built for rugged trekking in artic environments but they can adapt to life in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. An Akita Dog is moderately active indoors and would do best with a large, fenced yard and moderate daily exercise.

Large, powerful, alert, substantial and heavy boned with a broad head, deep muzzle, small eyes, erect ears, and curled tail - these are all characteristics of the breed.

These dogs are members of the Spitz/Nordic dog family (known for highly pricked ears, tightly curled fluffy tails and plush double coats). His thick double coat is capable of shedding heavily twice a year and requires daily brushing.

These dogs typically stand about 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 80 and 110 pounds. Colors include white, brindle, white with tan patches, and many other color combinations.

They are territorial and very protective. The owner of an Akita must find the time to properly train, socialize, handle and groom the dog as these dogs are very large and powerful and can be one of the more difficult dog breeds to train.

Country of origin: Japan
Lifespan: 10-12 years
Colors: pure white, red, sesame and brindle
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, thyroid both hypothyroid and autoimmune thyroiditis, skin problems, knee problems, urinary tract infections
Famous Akitas: Without question, the most famous Akita is Hachiko, a dog remembered in Japan for his loyalty. After his owner died, Hachiko returned to the train station every day for the rest of his life to wait for his owner. A life-size statue of Hachiko still stands at Shibuya Station.
