Airedale Terrier
Purebred Dog Information

The Airedale Terrier is the largest of the terrier breeds and is a member of the Terrier Group. They were one of the first dog breeds used for police duty in Germany and Great Britain.

Their coat is tan with black markings on the sides and upper parts of the body. They were originally bred to hunt otters.

They are intelligent enough to quickly learn what is required of it, but will easily become bored or simply refuse all together if you ask it to do the same thing over and over again.

Due to this inherent "Airedale stubborness", they can often be difficult to train, and require constant re-inforcement throughout training.

The coat is dense and wiry; it requires a great deal of grooming and may need professional help to maintain. They are a good natured and fun-loving breed of dog but are not recommended for apartment life. They do need plenty of exercise and are fairly energetic.

Dogs measure approximately 23 inches in height at the shoulder; bitches, slightly less. Both sexes should be sturdy, well muscled, and boned.

Country of origin: York
Lifespan: 10-12 years
Colors: Tan with black or dark grizzle markings
Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, skin problems, eye problems

More Airedale Information

• The Airedale is often called the "King of Terriers" because it is the largest of the terrier breeds, averaging in weight from 50 to 70 pounds.

• AKA the "Waterside Terrier", because they were originally bred to hunt otters.

• The Airedale was used extensively in World War One to carry messages to soldiers behind enemy lines.

• A sense of humor is an absolutely necessary qualification for any Airedale owner because of their often clownish, happy and gregarious attitude toward life.

Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren Harding all owned Airedales.

• Airedales have been trained for many years as police dogs.
