A member of the AKC Toy group, The Affenpinscher, originating in Germany, is one of the most ancient of Toy dogs.
This dog breed was originally developed to rid the kitchens, granaries and stables of rodents and other unwanted pests.
This dog breeds name itself means "monkey-like terrier." They are characterized by their monkey-like expression.
This little dog breed requires firm but loving guidance because they can be obstinate.
They are also very well known for possessing a "big dog in a small body" mentality that can get them into trouble from time to time.
They are also considered to be the smallest of the Schnauzers and Pinscher dog breeds. These dogs are very alert but also gentle, intelligent and affectionate. They can be very wary of strangers and are always prepared to defend his home and family which makes him a good watchdog.
In France the breed is described as the "diablotin moustachu" (moustached little devil). Both these names help to describe the appearance and attitude of this delightful little dog.
The average height for this little dog breed is about 9.5 to 11 inches in height. His average weight should be about 6.5 pounds. These little toy dogs will be easily satisfied with a short walk or a longer game of fetch.
Regular brushing will keep his coat in wonderful condition. The coat should be brushed several times a week. It is relatively easy to learn how to trim the dog around his feet, ears, and tail with scissors to keep him looking neat.
