Germany, is one of the most ancient of Toy dogs. This dog breeds name itself means "monkey-like terrier." They are characterized by their monkey-like expression. This breed requires firm but loving guidance because it can be obstinate. They are also very well known for possessing a "big dog in a small body" mentality that can get them into trouble from time to time. This dog breed was originally developed to rid the kitchens, granaries and stables of rodents and other unwanted pests.

They are an alert, fearless, inquisitive dog and a balanced, little, wiry-haired terrier-like toy dog whose intelligence and demeanor make it a good house pet. In France the breed is described as the "diablotin moustachu" (moustached little devil). Both these names help to describe the appearance and attitude of this delightful little dog. The coat should be brushed several times a week. It is relatively easy to learn how to trim the dog around his feet, ears, and tail with scissors to keep him looking neat.
